Commonwealth

Commonwealth
A free and loose association of sovereign states, based on voluntary cooperation between countries of equal status to each other and united by a common allegiance to the Crown, the monarch being the Head of the Commonwealth. Members are bound by certain ties such as a shared language (English) and common historical connections. Both have helped to create a consensus of political values that include democracy, human rights and sustainable economic and social development. The Statute of Westminster (1931) defined the relationship of the white countries of the old British Empire that had been granted independence, making them members of a new British Commonwealth of Nations. Since World War Two, most other countries of the old Empire have achieved their independence and have chosen to join what is now simply called The Commonwealth which has become a multi-racial grouping, with 53 members from 6 continents and containing over 1.8 billion people of many colours and creeds.
